The machine bounces around when it hits roots or big stones but I found that rather than fight it, just let it do its thing and then bring it back under control.
I used this on a large expanse of rough grass over heavy clay (which I had cut into spade-sized lumps) fully expecting it to bounce off the surface. Instead it chomped its way down, mincing the grass and weeds and creating a light tilth.
